Celebrating Refugee Week 2025: Community as a superpower

This week, Callaghan College Waratah Campus proudly commemorates Refugee Week, an occasion for us to recognise and honour the courage, resilience, and strength of individuals who have been forced to leave their homes. During this week, we celebrate the incredible contributions that refugees bring to our diverse community.

The theme for this year, “Community as a Superpower,” resonates deeply within our school. As our College Principal Ms Owen shared, “When you stop and think about it, that couldn’t be more true here at Callaghan. "Our school is enriched by the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and personal stories of our students. Many students, or their families, have come to Australia as refugees, bringing with them “strength, hope, and determination that inspire us all.”  Additionally, others have welcomed new classmates and helped them feel safe, supported and included. This is the essence of community—standing together and supporting one another.

A special assembly hosted by our EALD student leadership team showcased the heart of our community. We extend our gratitude to Mr. Mustafa, a parent, who shared a beautiful Kurdish musical performance. His contribution added a unique cultural touch to our celebrations. Additionally, Mrs. Filontseva bravely shared her moving personal story of being separated from family and friends in war-torn Ukraine, reminding us not to become desensitised to the impact of war and that the education we often take for granted is not accessible for young people living in conflict zones.

In light of this personal story, it’s important to remember Ms Owen’s message: “Every time you reach out to someone, include someone, listen to someone’s story—you’re using your superpower.” Each small act of kindness contributes to a stronger, more inclusive community.

As part of our Refugee Week activities, we invite all students to participate in a bake sale tomorrow (Thursday 19th June) during Break 1. This initiative aims to raise funds for UNICEF, supporting young people in conflict zones. There will be a wide range of baked goods, cakes,  snacks & international foods to try. Donations of pre-made baked goods with ingredient lists are appreciated & can be dropped at EALD faculty staffroom. Cash sales only on the day.

Let us continue to build an inclusive environment where every student feels they belong. As our College Principal emphasised, “When we stand together, we are stronger than anything that tries to divide us.”
