Aboriginal Student Support

Callaghan College Waratah Campus is committed to providing diverse, culturally significant educational opportunities for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. We aim to promote student leadership opportunities and guide students with support from family and community to achieve their career and personal goals.

Waratah Campus is located on Awabakal country, land of the Pambalong people.  Awabakal – Awaba – meaning ‘flat place’, ‘kal’ meaning ‘people of’. Nineteen percent of all our students identify as having an Aboriginal background.

The Gunya room

Our Aboriginal Education space, the Gunya room, is set up as a learning hub that provides students with access to:

  • learning support from our Aboriginal Learning Support Officers and teachers
  • guest speakers, workshops and classes
  • cultural actvities and links across the College and community.
This space is available to students during recess and lunch as well as during their allocated fortnightly mentoring sessions.

Personalised Learning Pathways

Our Aboriginal Student Support staff work with students and families to develop Personalised Learning Pathways for each of our Aboriginal students. PLPs document students’ individual academic, cultural and personal goals. We encourage our students to utilise their fortnightly mentoring sessions to work towards their PLP goals.

BroSpeak and SistaSpeak programs

Supports our Aboriginal students to explore, nurture and value their cultural identity, traditions and family connections through participation in cultural and community engagement activities, excursions and projects. These programs are facilitated by teachers, our Aboriginal student support staff and invited guests from our Aboriginal community.
