Human Society and its Environment

Students explore varied subjects in Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) to learn about history, geography, people, societies and culture.

Students learn specific historical and geographical concepts and skills in history and geography. They also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects.

A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:

  • research, gather and analyse information
  • question and make judgements 
  • write for a variety of purposes 

HSIE at Waratah Campus

At Waratah Campus, all students study History and Geography from Year 7 to Year 10.

Geography

In the Geography mandatory course, students will study:

Year 7:

  • Landscapes and Landforms
  • Place and Liveability

Year 8:

  • Interconnections
  • Water in the World

Year 9:

  • Changing places
  • Environmental Change and Management

Year 10:

  • Human Wellbeing
  •  Sustainable Biomes

History

In the History mandatory course, students will study:

Year 7:

  • Investigating the Ancient Past
  •  Ancient Egypt
  • Ancient China

Year 8:

  • Medieval Europe
  • The Black Death in Asia, Europe and Africa
  • The Polynesian Expansion Across the Pacific

Year 9:

  • Movement of Peoples
  • Australians at War (WWI and WWII)

Year 10:

  • The Holocaust
  • Rights and Freedoms (1945-Present)

HSIE Electives

At Waratah Campus, students have the opportunity to choose different HSIE electives from Year 7-10 including:

  • Commerce
  • International Studies
  • Aboriginal Studies
  • History’s Mysteries
  • Cultural Studies

The HSIE Faculty offer many additional opportunities for students including participation in:

  • ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day Services
  • Australian Geography and Australian History Competitions
  • Excursions and Incursions
  • International Cultural Exchanges
  • Environmental Activities e.g. Clean Up Australia Day, Earth Hour, Planet Savers
  • Regional Competitions
