Student leadership

At Waratah Campus, we take great pride in our vibrant student voice and leadership program, offering valuable opportunities for students to actively participate in decision-making and nurture their leadership skills. We invite students to explore the following student leadership opportunities:

Student leadership opportunities

Our four school captains have an important role in our school community. Each year, students in Year 9 can nominate themselves for captain in Term 4 and must give a nomination speech to the whole school. The captains lead assemblies and help organise school events. They also speak on behalf of their peers in school decisions and represent the school at community events. Through their hard work and enthusiasm, school captains help create a positive school culture for everyone.

The SRC is a group of students from years 7 to 10 who take on a leadership role in our school elected by their fellow students. Supported by Mr Minson, the SRC meets regularly to organise ways for students to participate in school life and empower students to have a voice within our school. The SRC aims to develop leadership skills and strengthen our school community through active participation.

Working with Darren Woodhouse and the Aboriginal Education team, this group focuses on building relationships with Partner Primary schools, supporting year transition programs, and organising events that promote a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

Supported by Mr Garbutt, this group promotes inclusivity, ensures diverse perspectives are considered in school planning, and coordinates Harmony Day and community art activities to foster a welcoming and inclusive school environment.

A formal structure with elected roles, this group collaborates with other Junior AECG teams and the AECG Council to shape its direction and foster a strong community connection.

All student leaders are expected to demonstrate commitment, accountability, strong communication skills, positivity, confidence, empathy, and effective listening. We are committed to developing these qualities in all students who join our leadership teams.
