Callaghan Tutorial Centre

About the Centre

Callaghan Tutorial Centre is an intensive educational support program for secondary school students with behaviour barriers to learning. Our focus is supporting students to re-engage with their education through differentiated learning.

The centre consists of two integrated Year 7 to Year 10 classrooms, each catering for up to 7 students at any one time. Students are allocated a classroom based on their individual needs and goals. Each classroom consists of dedicated and specialist teacher and support staff who work closely with students, families, outside professionals and home school teachers to cater for the individual needs of every student.

Our program aims to provide students with a safe space to enjoy a successful educational experience. We are committed to supporting our students to:

  • Experience a sense of safety and belonging.
  • Develop positive work habits, behaviours and attributes for learning.
  • Reflect on, understand, modify and self-regulate their own behaviours.
  • Develop communication and social skills that will support their ongoing education.

Our Learning

Our teaching and learning programs cover both Stage 4 (Year 7 and 8) and Stage 5 (Year 9 and 10) curriculum and are tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of each individual student. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Special interest subjects, including cooking, the gym and photography.
  • Excursions and community access activities aimed at building students’ social skills.

Each student develops their own individual learning plan with staff support, as well as a transition plan to support their successful return to mainstream schooling or alternate pathways.

Our Staff

Our specialist trained and passionate staff take shared responsibility for student improvement and work together to continually elevate and improve teaching practices for optimal learning experiences.

We understand that strong partnerships with families and home schools ensure the best results for our students, therefore, communication and collaboration is prioritised as part of our support for all students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Schools refer students to the Callaghan Tutorial Centre via the Newcastle Regional Placement Panel. We encourage parents and carers to speak with staff at your child’s home school about this process.

There is no cost to families for educational resources and equipment, however, there may be a small fee if your child attends excursions or community access events. This will be discussed with you well in advance.

Students attend the Centre five days a week as part of their placement, with the length of their placement tailored to their specific requirements (generally between 1 and 4 terms). Adjustments to the length of students’ stay may be recommended throughout the program based on students’ needs.

During their placement, students attend:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9am – 2pm
  • Wednesday 9am – 1:30pm

Students are provided with a Callaghan College Waratah Campus shirt and jumper when they begin their placement. These items remain on site and are washed by our support staff. Students are advised to wear navy or black pants with enclosed shoes at all times.

We use evidence-based positive behaviour support approaches at our Centre. We know that when we focus on connections, improving quality of life and support a sense of belonging, students can re-engage in their education through this positive experience.

Our individualised support programs aim to minimise the frequency and severity of concerning behaviours, through individualised goals, motivators and targeted interventions specific to the needs of each of our students.

The Callaghan Tutorial Centre is located on the grounds of Callaghan College Waratah Campus, in the Newcastle suburb of Waratah.

Parent Review:

“The caring teachers and support staff not only taught my son how to cope with day-to-day routine, they gave him a newfound confidence to succeed in his schooling environment and gave him tools to help mature himself and teach him self-worth and respect in his schooling environment. It has improved our home life and relationship with him immensely. We couldn’t be more grateful for this program as it really has changed our lives for the better.”
