Callaghan College wins Australian Education Award for Best Use of Technology

Australian Education has named Newcastle’s Callaghan College as the leading Australian school for Best Use of Technology.  The Awards were announced on Friday night (16 August) in Sydney, with only 24 awards given out to both government and non-government schools throughout Australia.

College Principal, Kylee Owen said “Callaghan is truly leading the way in the use of technology to support teaching and learning and this award is a wonderful public acknowledgement of that.

All staff across the College embed technology to improve learning and there are teams which work across campuses, including our Future Learning Team, to ensure we stay at the cutting edge.”

Callaghan College’s win recognises the host of technology solutions that are embedded within its three high school campuses:

  • learning management systems that provide a personalised learning platform for every student (that is accessible for teachers, students and parents alike)
  •  world first virtual reality action research project with the University of Newcastle focused on embedding within classroom learning
  •  instrumentally involved in the Department of Education’s implementation trial of Minecraft for Education
  •  extending the learning beyond classroom walls with access to learning resources and support 24/7
  •  involvement in global collaborative communities including Red Agency Project Global partnership
  • Callaghan teacher presenters at Sydney “CanvasCon” and Bett Asia Leadership summit (2018)
  • lighthouse school for Digital Administration and Management with all staff accessing cloud-based tools including SharePoint Online, Sentral and Canvas across the campuses.

College Head Teacher, Technology, David Summerville, stressed strong partnerships are pivotal to technology success. “Our leading position in the use of technology is the direct result of the innovation and collaboration between the College’s three campuses, with Department of Education, third party partnerships, and our students and their families.”
