Our Captains learn how local government works

Our School Captains joined student leaders from other local high schools at Youth Mock Council 2021, hosted by the Newcastle Youth Council. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to understand how local government works, learn civic activism, develop their communication and presentation skills and network with other young leaders and city officials.

Over two days they participated in workshops run by City Councillors about how council meetings work,  what a Notice of Motion is, and how changes are made that impact our community. They then worked in 'committees' to write their own Notice of Motions, including proposing  a Safety App, flagging unsafe “hot spots” around the area and initiatives to tackle providing resources for the homeless.

On the second day of the program they confidently presented their Notice of Motions in a 'mock' council session in the old council chambers.

We are very grateful to Newcastle Youth Council for making this fabulous opportunity possible.
