Supporting flood-affected communities

Our SRC, Aboriginal and EALD Leadership Teams recently raised money for flood affected families. Thank you to Ebony in Year 9 who gives an inspiring summary of this student-led initiative -

"I'm Ebony. I once attended Lismore High School. My family, along with thousands of people from the Northern Rivers were affected by flooding on the 28th of February 2022.

The leadership team and I came together to spread awareness and offer our support to the Lismore community. After preparing and planning for weeks, we decided to come up with a day that would target people in our school community to raise money. Students at Callaghan College donated a gold coin to dress up in blue, red, yellow and green - colours that represent some of the high schools in Lismore. Not only this, the Gunya room (our Indigenous room) stepped in to help. Students and staff made vegetable curry and johnny cakes for the teachers to buy to raise extra money.

During planning we knew we had to do something effective that would make a positive impact. We managed to raise $700 dollars and the money went towards purchasing Coles gift cards. These will be sent to local schools to distribute to families who have been deeply affected by the floods. We really hope this helps some people to get back on their feet and supports the community rebuild.

Lismore is a strong community; I have seen people work together. We've seen so much support from small businesses and families go towards other businesses and families who are struggling.

Many thanks to the students and teachers who have stepped in to support this important cause."
